Review: Dark Parties by Sara Grant

Title: Dark Parties
Author: Sara Grant
Publisher: Indigo
Rating: 4/5 stars

Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Neva has been trapped since birth. She was born and raised under the Protectosphere, in an isolated nation ruled by fear, lies, and xenophobia. A shield "protects" them from the outside world, but also locks the citizens inside. But there's nothing left on the outside, ever since the world collapsed from violent warfare. Or so the government says...

Neva and her best friend Sanna believe the government is lying and stage a "dark party" to recruit members for their underground rebellion. But as Neva begins to uncover the truth, she realizes she must question everything she's ever known, including the people she loves the most.

My thoughts:

This was an e-book edition that I purchased myself.
When reading the synopsis, the story sounded like it was going to be a great read, and that is why I got the book in the first place.
The chapters are a decent size, and it's told in first person.
It is a distopian novel about a girl called Neva and her friends wanting freedom from the Protectosphere, and knowing that the government is hiding something from the citizens.
So from that you can see there is mystery involved.
It's also nice to learn about a world that's different than our own.
The beginning of the story had me feeling a little confused. I wasn't getting into it at all, and found it a little boring. I still don't even know what this business is about the "dark party".
I then gave the rest of the story a chance, and good thing I did because it got better after that and I started to enjoy the story.
The ending of the book was really sweet, and a great end to the novel.
Neva is a confused human being. She is with a guy, and then ends up liking a guy that's with her friend, so she doesn't know what to think.
Neva knows there is something going on with these "missing people", and I found myself figuring out the mystery along with Neva.
Sanna I found to be a little pathetic. She claimed to be in love with someone she hadn't been long with, and then was totally oblivious to what her friend was doing behind her back.  Then she gave some information away to someone. I was just like "why did you just do that, you silly girl?" She just annoyed me.
Ethan to me was like a lost puppy that kept on hanging on to Neva like his life depended on it. That was annoying too.
I knew there was something weird about Braydon when reading about him. If you read the book, you will know what I'm on about more clearly.
Overall it had some good parts, and also some weird parts.
I feel like the beginning of the book needs to be improved, along as some parts of the characters. I just didn't connect to the characters as much as I'd wanted to.
The story does have the potential to be better, but it is good. It makes us think: is there a world outside the Protectosphere?
The cover of the book is great. You have the girl stretching up as if she wants her freedom badly.
After a long hard think, I decided to give this book four stars. I did like the story, but I think it could be better.

Happy reading =)

  1. I'm glad that you liked this one. :) I've wanted to purchase a copy of it for a while, but I hadn't seen many reviews on it! I really like the cover as well.

    1. Yeah. I've had the e-book for a while, and I wasn't sure what I'd think of it to be honest as of the mixed reviews on Goodreads.
