Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass

Title: The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Publisher: Harper Collins
Rating: 5/5 stars

Synopsis:

Thirty-five beautiful girls. Thirty-five beautiful rivals…

It’s the chance of a lifetime and 17-year-old America Singer should feel lucky. She has been chosen for The Selection, a reality TV lottery in which the special few compete for gorgeous Prince Maxon's love.

Swept up in a world of elaborate gowns, glittering jewels and decadent feasts, America is living a new and glamorous life. And the prince takes a special interest in her, much to the outrage of the others.

Rivalry within The Selection is fierce and not all of the girls are prepared to play by the rules. But what they don’t know is that America has a secret — one which could throw the whole competition… and change her life forever.

My review:

I was so excited to finally have my very own copy of this, especially after hearing so much about it. Not only did the beautiful cover draw me in, the synopsis did as well. A chance at being a princess and having your own prince? Yes please!
I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. I was absolutely hooked onto every word.
Every character was portrayed well. America is a strong independent woman and was a very like-able character. Prince Maxon was the prince you SO wanted to be with. He's handsome, charming, thoughtful and kind. You can also tell he is drawn to America. He is protective of her, and cares about their friendship. I love how America and Maxon are both denying their feelings. They say they're friends, when even we know there is something blossoming there.
Not a lot happens in the story, but it doesn't need to because it's the characters and their development which keeps you interested.
I really felt for America as she was entering for her family and friends, not for herself. Her secret love had ended their affair, so she was heartbroken. Now as we delve further into the story, she is torn between her growing feelings for prince Maxon, and her lingering feelings for Aspen. Who will she choose? Especially as both won't give up on her.
The book starts with us meeting the main character America and her family. The story is about classes, but in this book they are known as castes. It is interesting to see how people act when from different castes.
I love how the book ended. It leaves me wanting to know more. I want to read the next book and continue!
In general, the storyline was strong and I loved it. I haven't read a story with this type of synopsis before, so I'm glad I took the plunge as it was worth it.
The structure to the book is good. The chapters aren't too long, and they flow easily into the next.
The cover to the book is gorgeous. Not only is blue my favourite colour, but it really draws you in. The book is about a selection of girls being chosen to be the princess alongside Maxon, and on the cover you see all girls, and obviously the one at the front representing the main.
Overall I'm going to give this book five stars because it was a fantastic read, I loved all the characters and how they were written, and the writing style was fantastic. I honestly can't wait to continue with the next book.

Happy reading =)
